Why do we use fiberglass and wood windows instead of vinyl windows?
Just about every builder uses vinyl windows. Why? Because they are the cheapest windows out there, and at first glance vinyl seems to be a good idea. Many manufacturers and builders advertise that their vinyl windows insulate well, they never need paint or stain, and are maintenance free. But what builders won't tell you is, vinyl isn't as strong as other window materials like fiberglass or wood. Even worse, vinyl will actually begin to distort and soften at 160 degrees Fahrenheit. This temperature can be reached inside of a window on a sunny day with the drapes drawn. Even though all window materials can expand and contract with rising and falling temperatures, vinyl will distort two times more than wood, fiberglass, and aluminum. With all that movement, the seals between the glass and frame can break and let loose. So, how do those low maintenance, low cost vinyl windows sound now?
When choosing a builder, choose one that pays attention to these kinds of details. It will save you a lot of money in the future.
